 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)
 South Carolina

In South Carolina, a stratified, random sample of South Carolina students in approximately 50 middle and 50 high schools is surveyed every odd year.  This survey, conducted by the SC Healthy Schools project at the SC Department of Education, is part of a national effort to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States.  These behaviors, often established during childhood and early adolescence, include:

· Tobacco use

· Unhealthy dietary behaviors

· Inadequate physical activity

· Alcohol and other drug use

· Sexual behaviors that contribute to HIV infection, other

sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies
                  · Behavior that contribute to intentional and unintentional
                 injury
